The Quran

The Qur'an is the final message of Allah revealed to Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) through Angel Gabriel. Muslims consider the Qur'an to be a source of guidance, mercy and healing for the believers. The basic theme of the Qur'an is the relationship between Allah and His creation. At the same time it provides guidelines for a just society, proper human conduct and an equitable economic, legal and social system. The Qur'an also narrates stories of previous prophets, their nations and their fates. All matters related to the unseen are also discussed like angels, jinns, Day of Judgment, heaven and hell etc. The language of the original message was Arabic, but it has been translated into many other languages.

One of the most amazing things about the Qur'an is that it is memorized in its entirety by hundreds of thousands of Muslims all over the word - by those who are fluent in Arabic and also by those who are not.  Age is no barrier either for this great honor as young and old alike learn and memorize the Holy Quran.

Learning, reciting and listening to the Quran are all acts of worship which bring the Muslim closer to Allah and earns him a multitude of reward.

The etiquettes of proper recitation of the Qur'an

Allah commands respect for the Holy Quran in these words:

"And when the Quran is recited, give ear to it and pay heed, so that you may obtain mercy." (Al-A'raf: 204).

A reader of Quran should follow certain principles when reciting the Qur'an:

  • The reader should be in a state of purity and perform ablution before beginning the recitation.
  • The clothes and the place in which he reads the Qur'an should be clean.
  • Begin the recitation with ta'wwuth (seeking refuge in Allah from Satan)
  • The reader should say "In the Name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful"  at the beginning of each surah, except surah Tauba.
  • Read each word carefully and reflect upon the meaning of what one reads.
  •  A truly beautiful and melodious recital is one which follows the correct pronunciation and perfect application of the tajweed rules.
  • It is required of anyone who hears the Qur'an recited whether from a reader (Qari) or radio/television/computer or other source, to listen and pay attention to the verses.
  • A person should not yawn or fidget during the recitation.
  • The reader should avoid interrupting a recitation for the purpose of talking to people, except when necessary.

Amazing recitation of the Qur'an by a young child!

"Verily the one who recites the Qur'an beautifully, smoothly and precisely, he will be in the company of the noble and obedient angels. And as for the one who recites with difficulty, stammering and stumbling through its verses, then he will have twice that reward." [Sahihain: Al-Bukhari and Muslim]
