Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) is the last and final messenger of Allah. He was born in Makkah in the year 570 AD. Since his father died before his birth, and his mother when he was just six, he was raised first by his loving grandfather and then by his uncle from the respected tribe of Quraysh. As he grew up, he became known as Al-Sadiq (the truthful) and Al-Amin (the trustworthy) and was sought after for his ability to arbitrate in disputes.
Even before his prophet hood, he was of a deeply religious nature, and shunned the decadence and idolatry of his society. It became his habit to meditate from time to time in the Cave of Hira near the summit of Jabal al-Nur, the 'Mountain of Light' near Makkah. There at the age of 40, Muhammad (pbuh ) received his first revelation from Allah through Angel Gabriel. This revelation, which continued for twenty-three years, is known as the Qur'an.
Prophet Muhammad began to preach the message of monotheism to the fiercely pagan society. He and his small group of followers suffered bitter persecution, which grew so fierce that in the year 622 Muslims migrated to Medinah where he continued to preach Allah's message. In the next 10 years, Islam spread to every corner of the Arabian Peninsula.
In 10 hijri, Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) performed Hajj with more than 140,000 followers. He gave his famous last sermon in which he abolished the practices of polytheism and enjoined people to remain steadfast on the religion of Islam. He returned to Medina and soon afterwards, he fell ill. At the age of 63, he passed away in the chamber of his beloved wife Ayesha. He left behind no material things but his legacy to mankind was the religion of Islam and his sunnah.
