Allah

Muslims believe in One Almighty God, known by the name, Allah. Belief in one God, Allah in Arabic, constitutes the very foundation of Islam. Muslims believe that there is no deity except Allah. He is absolutely transcendent. Allah is the Creator and the Sustainer of the universe, Who is similar to nothing and nothing is comparable to Him.

The basic message of Islam is that Allah and His creation are distinctly different entities.  The message of Islam as brought by all the prophets is to worship Allah alone and to avoid the worship of His creation either directly or indirectly.

"Say: He is Allah, the One and Only;  Allah, the Eternal, Absolute;  He begets not, nor is He begotten; And there is none like unto Him". (Surah112)

Some Attributes of Allah

  • Allah is one and none has the right to be worshipped but Him. We should associate no partners with Him.
  • While everything on this earth is mortal and temporary, Allah is eternal and ever living.
  • It is Allah who sustains everyone and everything. All creation stands in need of Allah and relies on Him for His bounties and blessings but Allah stands in need of nothing that has been created.
  •  To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and the earth and all creatures come under Allah's Sovereignty.
  • Allah is the Lord of  the Day of Judgment and each person will be accountable to Allah for his deeds in this world.
  • All knowledge is from Allah and we can never learn anything except that which He wills.
  • Allah's power extends over the heavens and the earth and encompasses everything.
  • Allah is the Most High, the Most Great.

Quick Facts: Belief in Allah

  • Muslims believe Allah to be the Creator and Sustainer of the universe and the only Being worthy of worship.
  • For a person to become Muslim, one simply has to declare "There is no god worthy of worship except Allah and Muhammad (peace be upon Him) is His messenger," with sincere heart.
  • To believe, to uphold and to declare the oneness of Allah is "Tawheed".  Tawheed comes from the words, "Wahid (one)" and "Ahad (unique)."
  • To join or associate partners with Allah is called 'shirk.'  It is to believe that beside Allah there are other beings who share the Divinity with Allah. Shirk is a major sin in Islam.
