Eid-ul-Adha Celebrations

"Surely Abraham was an example, obedient to Allah, by nature upright, and he was not of the polytheists. He was grateful for Our bounties. We chose him and guided him unto a right path. We gave him good in this world, and in the next he will most surely be among the righteous." (Qur'an 16:120-121)

Muslims throughout the world celebrate the holiday of Eid al-Adha (Festival of Sacrifice) at the end of the Hajj -the annual pilgrimage to Mecca. During the celebration of Eid al-Adha, Muslims commemorate and remember Prophet Ibraheem's  trials, by sacrificing an animal such as a sheep, cow, camel, or goat.

The meat from the sacrifice of Eid al-Adha is then distributed. One-third is eaten by immediate family , one-third is given away to friendsand relatives, and one-third is donated to the poor. This is to symbolize that all blessings come from Allah, and Muslims should open our hearts and share their bounties with others, especially those in need.

Eid-ul-Adha Salaat from Mecca

Poetry : Eid-ul-Adha

So once a year the time draws near

Where we reflect, think and ponder

Of the fasting month where we strove steadfast

A cleansing of heart from dawn to dusk

So once a year, who shall prove the victor?

Naught but the one who strove to persevere

From dusk to dawn and back to dusk

And this the time to draw near

And the time to forgive the past

Cause no one is perfect, not one of us

And continue to refrain from lust

And search and search for the thing that lasts

A steadfast faith that does not rust

In this time of great festivities

Neither be extravagant nor miserly

But the middle road is wisdom

Be in moderation and be free

So give as you can spare to the needy

And smile and love and be merry

For smiles do not diminish when generously

For have you seen the one who rehearses?

Rehearsing smiles and in private curses

Do not compete with one another

Save in piety and pursuing the Herafter

Do not let your alms be smothered

By grand shows and backbiting

For it's good to give freely

But only if in sincerity

Cause though the clothes are new and the house renewed

We ask if our hearts are new and our faith renewed

Decorations are polished but are our manners as such?

And how many have gone to the sales in rush?

But to the poor and torn, hastened not as much?

Is the worldly wealth our only crutch?

That a month of fasting affected us not much

Cause Eid al-Adha

Perhaps next year you shall return

Ah! Eid al-Adha

Perhaps by then we have returned

Does anyone pause, reflect, think and ponder

Of our unlettered prophet, the last Messenger

Assigned a sign and a sign in kind

The last one, the very last of his kind

Who brought a message in the form of a book

Message and miracle all in one

A mighty prose wondrous spun

Or have we never even had a look?

Or are we too busy chasing this world?

Has the lure proven that irresistible?

No doubt this the time for celebrating

But don't lose sight of why we're rejoicing

It's a victory, it's true for sure

But only to those who in faith persevere

Again in moderation lies the answer

Rejoice and laugh but do remember

Of the Hereafter and our purpose here

Cause it may be that our time is near

Cause it may be that our time is here

Cause Eid al-Adha

Perhaps next year it shall return

Ah! Eid al-Adha

Perhaps by then we have returned
